Most of the time, nursery is about learning through play. So expect lots of play! There will be playing with bubbles, water, sand even snow if it does snow! Then there is of course toys both indoors and outdoors.
These tools will be used to introduce letters, numbers, vocabulary as well as key social development such as sharing and taking turns.
In Receptions, a little more serious learning in introduced. Particularly letter sounds and how to read. Numbers will also be introduced and simple counting and subtracting. This is also where children will muster the art of reading.
From Years 1 - 6 more gradual introduction of formal learning will be introduced. Mostly, learning will be through major themes through topics such as the Egyptians, the Greeks, the Victorians, the Romans to name a few. There will be days when the students get to dress up in the various outfits.
Science and Maths will also feature through learning how they apply to everyday life so that it will spark interest in the students.
A chid may get to learn a musical instrument at school. Mostly, it will be something the child can bring home to practise. So you might look at the brass instruments or maybe even a violin.
Parents might be invited to watch their child's class and Christmas concerts. Parents might also be invited to view their child's arts and music concert. Then there is the Christmas and summer fairs and cupcake sales. Of course there will also be the very important Parent-Teacher consultations!
This is the most fun and in a way relaxing time for your child before moving on to a more serious Secondary School life!
